The problem
Globally, 262 million children and young people are out of school, while millions more attend but fail to acquire basic skills. In Indonesia, more than 70% of youths fall below minimum proficiency levels in literacy and numeracy, limiting their chances of social mobility. Traditional education systems are struggling to meet demand, particularly for low-income and marginalised communities. Without innovative solutions, millions of young people risk being excluded from the knowledge and opportunities needed to thrive in the modern economy.
The solution
Solve Education Foundation (SEF) tackles this challenge through Ed the Learning Bot (Edbot.ai), a free, AI-driven platform that delivers gamified lessons in literacy, numeracy, STEM, financial literacy, and employability skills. Learners are guided by an AI mentor, complete missions and quizzes, and earn points that can be redeemed for internet data packs or access to workshops. This incentive system helps sustain engagement, even in low-resource settings.
Beyond individual learning, SEF builds youth-led communities where learners support and motivate each other online and offline. The platform is lightweight, accessible on low-bandwidth connections, and aligned with national curricula through close partnerships with governments and NGOs.
The insight
SEF has grown rapidly, reaching almost one million learners across Indonesia, Nigeria, and beyond, with more than 700,000 new users in 2024 alone. Its learners have completed over 10 million lessons, and those engaged in learning communities show the strongest retention. By 2027, SEF aims to reach 5 million young people, enhance its AI-driven personalisation features, and expand Solve Work to provide real job opportunities for its graduates.
