Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, but its forests, mangroves and marine ecosystems face pressure from land conversion, overexploitation, illegal logging, hunting and insecure local tenure. Many Indigenous and rural communities live alongside these ecosystems but lack formal rights, financial incentives and governance structures to protect them, while only a small share of climate and conservation funding reaches local organisations.

Planet Indonesia helps Indigenous and rural communities take formal legal control of the land, forests and fisheries they depend on. It supports locally governed conservation cooperatives, participatory management plans, community patrols and livelihoods support, including savings and loan groups. In addition to direct implementation, it trains and supports Indonesian civil society organisations to replicate the model in their own regions.

Planet Indonesia demonstrates that communities can be the infrastructure for long-term conservation. By linking legal rights, cooperative governance, livelihoods and ecological protection, it makes conservation practical and locally owned. Its next stage is about proving how this partner-led model can scale across Indonesia while maintaining depth, evidence quality and community leadership.
