The problem

India faces an acute learning crisis. With more than 260 million school-going students, it has one of the world’s largest education systems. Despite increased access, learning outcomes remain poor. National Achievement Survey and ASER reports highlight steep declines in basic reading and arithmetic skills: 62% of Grade 8 students struggle with basic math, and only 24% of Grade 5 students can do simple subtraction. Early learning gaps persist over time, making foundational literacy and numeracy critical for long-term success. Classrooms often have multi-grade, multi-level learners, straining teachers’ capacity to meet diverse needs. Teacher shortages, rote learning, misaligned curricula, and low parental support further widen the gap. As a result, millions of students risk being locked in cycles of low learning and poverty.

The solution

At the core of Ei’s design is technology that serves as an equaliser, ensuring that every child receives an equitable learning experience. Ei focuses not just on what students learn, but how they learn. Its pedagogy-driven research along with use of technology integrate diagnostic assessments that identify gaps in student learning, and remediate them with AI-enabled personalised adaptive learning platform that personalises lessons in literacy and numeracy while providing teachers with real-time dashboards to track progress and adapt their instruction. These solutions are seamlessly embedded into school timetables and teacher workflows, supported by training and on-ground implementation. Designed for India’s diverse contexts, Ei’s solutions are available in multiple languages and can operate offline, ensuring accessibility even in low-resource settings.

The insight

Over the past two decades, Ei has worked with schools across multiple Indian states and international geographies to improve learning outcomes. Independent studies show that government school students using Mindspark improve by half a grade level in just six months, demonstrating its potential to close learning gaps at scale. By combining commercial contracts with government, CSR, and philanthropic partnerships, Ei makes personalised, high-quality learning accessible to students across both private and public education systems.

Looking ahead, Ei aims to significantly expand the reach of its ASSET assessments, and scale Mindspark to reach at least 10 million learners annually by 2030, while deepening its presence in Africa and the Middle East.
