The problem

The world is falling far short of the financing needed to meet climate goals. Current flows cover just 20% of what is required annually to keep warming below 1.5°C, and corporate philanthropy directs less than 5% of its giving to environmental causes. At the same time, businesses face mounting scrutiny from regulators and the public, yet many lack a clear, credible entry point to support the environment. Without mechanisms that make environmental giving both accessible and accountable, corporate contributions remain limited, fragmented, and vulnerable to greenwashing.

The solution

1% for the Planet makes environmental giving simple, credible, and scalable. Its global certification programme enables businesses to commit 1% of their annual sales to vetted environmental nonprofits, verified through a streamlined process that combines digital tools with staff support. Members gain not only certification but also access to a global community of like-minded businesses and guidance in building impactful nonprofit partnerships.

In 2022, the organisation expanded its model by launching the Planet Impact Fund, which blends philanthropy with impact investing. Donors can contribute to pooled or individual funds, with a portion distributed annually to environmental partners and the remainder invested in climate-focused assets for long-term impact. Together, these approaches mobilise private-sector resources and channel them into urgent environmental work worldwide.

The insight

Since 2002, 1% for the Planet has grown into a trusted global movement, certifying more than USD800m in giving and connecting thousands of businesses to environmental partners across more than 100 countries. Surveys show strong satisfaction, with members citing credibility, community, and storytelling value as key benefits. Looking ahead, the organisation aims to surpass USD1bn in certified giving by 2028, while scaling the Planet Impact Fund and investing in AI-driven certification tools.
